Chapter Ten
A Drastic Change of Course. Some Woods Are
Filled with Light â But Thereâs Also Darkwood.
DID WE CATCH the white mudpuppy? It would be preposterous to assume the contrary. How hard could it be to catch a fat earthworm on blazing hot concrete at noon with the nearest puddle or mound of earth being some fifteen feet away?
It was dirt easy. One may not even bother about the catching part. It would suffice to put a jar filled with moist and chilly dirt on one side, and the worm would hurry to hide inside. All youâd need to do would be to put a lid on it.
That was just how it happened â as planned and on schedule. It went off so smoothly and easily I nearly dislocated my jaw yawning from the sheer tedium of it, just like the rest of my companions. Orbit, a true chaote, got nauseous from participating in an activity as precisely-organized as this hunt, and was hiding his face in his palm, moaning softly, most likely feeling the relentless order suppress the anarchic workings of his disorganized soul. It must have been a torture, and I was beginning to regret having dragged our bald prophet along.
The Crimson Cross stayed true to their word, having organized everything weâd needed. The white mudpuppy didnât have any choice in the matter at all.
First the entire lower level of the Den was scoured clean by mass battle magic. Then the local boss was pulled off the back of the
gigantic mudpuppy and beaten to a bloody pulp in a faraway corner by a throng of high-level players. The kobold leader just lay there in fetal position and moaned softly, longing for deathâs release.
His steed hopped onto one of the rocky islets in the water and froze in astonishment. Everything around was ablaze in blue flames.
The heat was so intense that the giant cave prawns got cooked instantly â with a little salt, butter, and garlic and on platters of copper theyâd pair really well with a crisp chilly Chardonnay.
The white mudpuppy panicked.
But at that point the wall of blue flames parted, revealing a dark passage that appeared as if by magic. The enormous mudpuppy rushed that way and slammed into the bars of a cage made of dwarf-forged steel. I was standing on the top of this contraption, and it took me a single lazy kick to release the catch and make the door slam down like a guillotineâs blade. The creature was caught. The traps started to shake and vibrate, but to no avail â
cages like this one were used for catching monsters of a much higher caliber than a puny cave denizen like the hapless mudpuppy, so it didnât even notice its frantic attempts to break free.
So that was how I captured the white mudpuppy, swindling the game system shamelessly. It would be no mean feat to catch a creature like this on oneâs own if one wasnât backed up by two clans and given access to their state-of-the-art equipment like the cage delivered here by an expensive teleport.
